How do you reach Gosaikunda Lake?
Drive 6 to 7 hours from Kathmandu to the trailhead at Dunche or Dhunche, then trek for two and a half days along mountain ridgelines through Deurali, Dimsa, Chandanbari, and Laurebina.
The ascent from Dunche is steep, climbing nearly 2,400 vertical meters over two walking days.
Alternatively, trekkers on the Langtang Valley trek can branch off at Thulo Syabru to link up with the trail.
Trekkers can also cross the 4,610 m Laurebina Pass to descend southward into the Helambu valley and Sundarijal.
Why is Gosaikunda sacred?
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva thrust his holy trident into the mountainside to draw freezing water and quench his burning throat after drinking the deadly Halahala poison churned from the ocean.
Every August during the Janai Purnima full moon festival, thousands of pilgrims hike to the lake to bathe in its freezing waters.
A large black rock in the center of the lake is believed by devotees to be the submerged lingam shrine of Shiva.
The lake is equally sacred to Buddhist practitioners and Tamang shamans (Jhankris) who perform drum rituals along the shore.
What are the altitude considerations for Gosaikunda?
The climb from Dunche at 2,000 m to Gosaikunda at 4,380 m gains altitude rapidly over just 48 hours, making acute mountain sickness a common risk for hikers rushing the ascent.
Spending a night at Chandanbari (Sing Gompa) at 3,330 m and another at Laurebina at 3,900 m is essential for safe acclimatization.
Laurebina features a small health checkpost in peak pilgrimage seasons.
Drink plenty of water and never push past Laurebina if experiencing persistent headaches or nausea.
