The Walled City of Mustang
A remarkably preserved Tibetan cultural enclave.
Founded in 1380 by Ame Pal, Lo Manthang was a prosperous hub on the salt trade route between Tibet and India. The city is enclosed by a massive earthen wall, and until recently, it was entirely closed to foreigners.
Inside the walls, you will find the Royal Palace and several significant gompas, including Jampa Lhakhang, Thubchen Gompa, and Chodey Gompa. The restoration of these ancient structures has brought to light some of the finest Buddhist frescoes in the Himalayas.
