What makes the Karnali region distinctive?

The stark contrast between southern coniferous forests and the barren Tibetan rain shadow. While Rara is ringed by lush blue pines, Upper Dolpo is a wind-swept desert of ochre cliffs and ancient Bon monasteries.

Shey Phoksundo Lake at 3,611 m is an oligotrophic jewel with vibrant turquoise water that sustains no fish.

Upper Dolpo preserves centuries-old Tibetan and Bon Po religious traditions untouched by modern globalization.

Because it lies behind the Himalayan wall, the northern half can be trekked during the summer monsoon months.

How do you organize a trek in Karnali?

Fly from Nepalgunj to mountain airstrips at Juphal (for Dolpo) or Talcha (for Rara), and secure registered trekking agencies for camping logistics in remote valleys.

Rara Lake has simple teahouses, while Dolpo expeditions require complete camping equipment, cooks, and pack mules.

Upper Dolpo requires special government restricted area permits with a minimum group size of two foreign hikers.

Trekkers must carry comprehensive emergency medical kits and satellite communications.
